What we teach
• Classes and workshops are offered both virtually and in person •
Drawing
Build a solid foundation for your artistic practice by learning the fundamentals of drawing. Instruction includes exploration of line, accuracy in proportion, effective shading, and rendering of form and light, with an emphasis on observational drawing.
Painting
Explore color, texture, and the qualities inherent to specific types of paint. Classes are offered in watercolor, acrylic, oil, and pastel. You will learn fundamentals of color theory along with media technique and care of materials.
Printmaking
Printmaking is a rich media that most often results in multiple prints of an original work. Various types of printmaking are offered, including: relief, screen printing, intaglio (etching), and monotype. Equipment such as laser cutters and rotary tools put a modern spin on traditional media.
Mixed Media
Almost every media can be combined. Learn how to create with multiple types of art materials, while ensuring structural integrity of the piece. You will gain conceptual understanding of the synthesis of ideas and process while experimenting with traditional and non-traditional media.
Book Binding
Explore the many structures of artist books and learn to choose the right type of paper for different applications. Classes include Japanese stab binding, signature-bound soft cover books, and hard cover books. These structures can also be combined with leather work.
Leather
Learn the fundamentals of leather work as you create functional art objects from vegetable tanned leather. Skills include: working with patterns, cutting, tooling, dying, hand stitching, and finishing. Tools and suppliers are explained, with options in every budget.
Reborning
Learn techniques for creating hyper-realistic baby dolls from vinyl kits. You will explore painting techniques using Genesis Heat Set Paints. Rooting classes cover: how to choose mohair and rooting needles, mapping the head, directional rooting, and how to create different densities of hair. We use Golden Fleece Mohair to emulate real baby hair.
Contemporary Craft
Many of the crafts we learn as children can be elevated to fine art or designer quality objects. Classes vary and may include things like beaded jewelry, pyrography (wood burning), polymer clay, laser cut products, woven wire sculpture, sewing, embroidery, and tapestry weaving.
Conceptual
How do you get past artist block and expand creativity? Learn specific techniques for improving your artistic practice and expanding upon ideas. Other skills include: how to look at art in galleries and museums, how to critique, how to create multiple pieces within a theme, and how to weave narrative into your art.
